Day 2 – Devyn

Day 2 – August 12
Today was our free day in Lima. Everyone set off on their different adventures early on in the day. A small group of girls and I started our day early with a guided city bus tour. We were extremely lucky to have a small group and a wonderfully animated tour guide. After exploring all over the city and seeing the incredible ruins of Huaca Pucllana and passing through the historic olive tree park and the colonial district, we arrived at the main city square of downtown Lima, Plaze Mayor. Our tour continued on foot to a Pisco museum, which is the typical spirit of Peru, and a chocolate museu. We visited a few shops, sampled some Pisco, and continued our tour to the Cathedral Basilica of Lima. The architecture and history was awe-inspiring. We had the incredible opportunity to go down into the Crypts of San Fransico, which are the catacombs beneath the cathedral. As our tour wrapped up and we said our goodbyes to our guide, our group reflected upon how grateful we all felt to have had such great experiences with the local people and how rich we’ve found the culture to be. The rest of the day was spent exploring and wondering open air markets and art museums, and soaking in the amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. I had dinner at the well known restaurant at Huaca Pucllana, where we sat on a terrace and enjoyed traditional Peruvian food and drink while overlooking ancient ruins of a pyramid build by the pre-Incan civilian. I’m so thankful for our time to immerse ourselves in this colorful, lively city, and I couldn’t have asked for a better time exploring Lima.
